The volume cannot be ejected because it is currently in use

Problem

In Mac OS X, you right click your external hard drive and click eject but it gives the following error:
“The volume [Name] cannot be ejected because it is currently in use”

Solution

  1. Make sure all programs are closed.
  2. Click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen, then click Force Quit.
  3. In the list click Finder.
  4. Now click the Relaunch button.

Then try ejecting the drive again.

  1. Thank you so much! I am pretty literate when it comes to my mac, but after quitting all tasks, this was the only solution to actually work! I never would have though of doing this on my own!

  2. thank you so much, this is much faster and better then all the stuffs on apple’s own community forum. I used to reboot. I like your solution better.
