How to start Windows in Safe Mode

Method 1

  1. Turn the computer on or restart it.
  2. Start tapping the F8 key.
  3. The Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu appears.
  4. Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected and press Enter. You can choose an option by pressing the up and down arrow keys.

Method 2

Windows Vista, 7 or newer:

    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Type msconfig and press Enter.
    3. Click the Boot tab.
    4. Tick the Safe Boot option and press OK.

Windows XP:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type msconfig and press Enter.
  4. Click the BOOT.INI tab.
  5. Tick /SAFEBOOT and press OK.

Once loaded into Safe Mode make sure to untick the option before you restart.
