Remove Google Software Update on Mac

Problem

Google Software Update is currently on your computer and you wish to remove it; possibly because you have no Google software installed.

Solution

Please note: Using any Google software after these steps may reinstall Google Software Update.

  1. Go to your Applications folder.
  2. Open the Utilities folder.
  3. Run the Terminal application.
  4. Copy and paste the following into the Terminal window:
    ~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/install.py --uninstall
  5. Press Enter.
  6. Copy and paste the next command into Terminal:
    sudo /Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/install.py --uninstall
  7. Press Enter.
  8. You will need to enter your password and press Enter.
    • It won’t show any characters when you type.
    • If you do not have a password then set one first.

One of these commands will give errors as Google Software Update is installed in one of two places.
