“This device cannot start” Code 10 error in Device Manager on Windows

Problem

When trying to use a device on your machine the device will not start. Upon inspecting Device Manager, you have a exclamation mark next to a device; when you select the device’s properties it displays error 10 and states that the device cannot start.

Cause

Device manager cannot start the device.

Solution

1. Click Start
2. Type in devmgmt.msc
3. Right click on the device affected (will display a exclamation mark over it) and select properties.
4. In the driver tab, select Uninstall, click Ok
5. In the device manager window select the “Scan for hardware changes”  Dependent on the device a restart may be required to un-install and reinstall a device.
