  1. This worked like a charm, thank you so much! Endnote should have this fix on their website! i almost went and purchased Endnote X5! Thank you thank you thank you!

  2. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! This works for Word 2011 and Endnote X5. I nearly went crazy trying to get it to work and the Endnote website has no info on how to get it done.

  3. Thank you so much! This fixed the problem immediately! What great directions!! I am so grateful for your help!! I agree with everyone who says that Endnote really needs to post this on their website. Thank you. Now I can do my homework 🙂

  4. That’s very kind of you. Your instructions are very clear and simple to follow. I have tried several times in the past and could not sort it out. Now all is well, it is working perfectly. I can now prepare my references peacefully. I also agree with the other participants that Endnote should see to it that their website has sufficient information for people who experience such troubles. You have been of great help.

    1. I had this problem too. Solution:
Make sure “Visual Basic” was installed when you installed word.
If you have it, you should be able to open word and go: Tools>Macro>Visual Basic Editor and open the Visual Basic Editor without an error message.
If you don’t have it installed, you need it for endnote to work, so open your install package of microsoft office and do a customized install of only visual basic while all microsoft office applications are closed.

After this, it works for me!

  5. Thank you so much! Very clear instructions and worked perfectly. So happy to see that little Endnote toolbar show up in Word for Mac 2011. Cranky that this information isn’t available through Endnote X4 help or on the Endnote support website. A thousand thanks!

  6. This was the ONLY helpful advice on how to get EndNote and Mac Word 2011 to talk… and I had EndNote x5 and it still works! Thank you!

  7. Thanks for your help, it seems that this is one of the few pages out there that helps specifically with that bundle – I’ve been looking for the download for a while. Cheers!

  8. Lifesaver!
Worked without a problem or delay.
Thanks for making my morning easier than it might have been.

  9. Thanks so much! Like everyone I was going crazy, was ready to find another referencing system. Soo simple, you should write the instruction manuals (=

  10. I did everything step by step, but although endnote is kind of connected to word now, I still don’t see the endnote toolbar show up.. Have Word 2011 and EndNote X5 which was supposed to work according to your comments.. I noticed that the Endnote bundle in the startup folder was greyish, when I chose the Word folder. Might this be the problem?

    Best wishes,
    Christine

  11. Hey, thanks a lot but….. it did not really work with me…… when i enter the Tool menu in Word to enter a reference, instead of finding EndNote 4 (and then from there entering the reference), what i find is EndNote 6 and because i have EndNote 4 the whole thing gives em an error…. any idea how ot fix this?
    Thanks a lot

  12. Thanks a lot.
It was one of those rare nice and detailed step by step directions that leads to success

  13. Thanks mate! It really works on Endnote x6 and Office 2011.

I actually had an old version of the Cite While You Write bundle in the Word startup folder, which somehow prevented them from working with each other, even after following your instructions. I deleted the old version and voilà! Worked like a charm!

    Thanks!

  14. Thank you thank you — a precious two hours of my study day wasted installing all this stuff and I was afraid I’d fall at the last hurdle — getting Word and Endnote to actually talk to each other. You’re a genius.

    1. This index is really hulefpl. Thanks for your effort. I have a question for you, though. What’s the difference between Zoltero and EndNote? Which one is more beneficial for people who need to write and publish their paper?

  15. I read at least 3 other posts on how to fix this and this one was the only one that actually helped! Thanks!

  16. Hey thanks heaps for taking the time – there is no way I would have worked that out on my own!

  17. thank you so much! this worked like a charm with my quirky weird mac! thank you so so so so so so so much!!

  18. What if applications/Microsoft office/office does not have a set up folder?
Saw someone earlier had this problem but later found it?
