Remove Inbox Toolbar

This article was updated with new information on 4th April 2012.

Problem

When you open Firefox, you may get a message regarding an unwanted Inbox toolbar. It appears in the browser above your tabs.

Solution

These instructions apply to the latest version of Firefox and may be worded differently for older versions.
[Get latest version]

  1. In Firefox, click Tools (on the top menu), then click Add-ons.
(Windows users may need to press the Alt key to see the Tools menu)
  2. In the Add-ons window, click the Extensions tab.
  3. Locate “Inbox Toolbar” and click the Remove button.
  4. It will say it has been removed. Next to this, click the “Restart now” link.
  5. Reset your homepage.
  6. On your search bar (usually at the top right), click the down arrow next to the Inbox icon and click “Manage Search Engines…” (See the screenshot below. Click the image to enlarge.)
  7. In the list, click once on Inbox Search and click the Remove button.
  8. Click OK and your search should revert back to what it was before.
Windows users may also need to perform the following additional steps:
  1. Click the Start button (Windows XP users should then click Run).
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Find Inbox Toolbar in the list and click on it once.
If it’s not there then you do not need to follow any more instructions.
  4. Click the Remove or Uninstall button.
  5. Click Yes, Continue or Allow to any prompts you are presented with regarding the uninstall.

    1. Hi Ben,

I wasn’t suggesting that your software was not safe. I was just asked by someone on how to remove the software. Thanks for replying.

  2. I am using a mac pro 10.6 os with firefox 10 and I cant get rid of it either
    followed my own knowledge
followed all the different tech tips

    still there!!!

    I want it gone!
Im now reduced to using safari and I have it! if this isn’t gone soon Im going to reboot my whole mac!

    1. I agree and having the same problem. Have you found a fix to once and for all removing IN BOX?

      1. You are using Firefox?
Also, is it just the homepage? When do you see any traces of Inbox?

  3. Right!
Managed to sort it but cant really work out what Ive done, so here goes…

deleted all history, caches etc then deleted app from HD and re-installed, then somehow manage to reset entire app to default and repeated process a second time. on third opening and try, inbox toolbox was gone gone gone!

    Yippee!

Hope that helps someone out there

  4. Can’t remove INBOX.COM with anything. It simply doesn’t show up in any uninstall program so they can’t remove it. There is no INBOX.COM toolbar so I can’t click on that to use the uninstall function. Anything else I can try?

BTW – since this INBOX.COM appeared on the PC, I can’t send and receive any emails! In my opinion this is one of the worst scams to come off the Internet.

  5. I say again – since this appeared on the computer, it is impossible to send or receive emails. Changing the home page doesn’t fix the problem.

    1. OK. What program do you use for your emails? Is it Apple Mail, Outlook or something else?

What errors do you see (if any) when you try to send or receive emails?

  6. Email client is Outlook Express.

When clicking on SEND/RECEIVE it goes through the motions (and reports them completed) but nothing is received.

  7. Well OE worked perfectly until this INBOX.COM appeared on the PC. NO software that loads itself on to somebody’s computer should then require them to change other software for it to work.

The fact that we can’t get rid of it means that INBOX.COM is actually a virus and the company should be prosecuted accordingly.

Thanks for your help but I was looking for advice on getting rid of INBOX.COM, not changing something that works fine.

    1. From what I’ve seen, sometimes email providers discontinue functionality from older email clients (such as Outlook Express). However, the change may not take effect until mail settings are changed so I think its possible that (and this is just speculation) Inbox, or some other software installed near that time, had perhaps changed these settings.

I can’t fully back this claim as I am only talking from personal experiences and I don’t know who your email provider is either but one of the reasons I recommended Windows Live Mail is because support for Outlook Express can be very hard to get as well as support being discontinued by a lot of providers.

  8. Email provider is Talk-Talk and OE is working fine on two other computers here.

If this INBOX.COM can change email settings (without the user’s permission) it is clearly a virus.

    1. I can’t say for sure if Inbox changes email settings but obviously something has changed to stop you sending or receiving emails. It might be worth contacting Talk-Talk so that they can check your current settings.

  9. I also cannot remove Inbox Toolbar from my windows 7 computer. I removed it from Programs control panel, and also from Firefox Addins, but it still appears in every search in Firefox. This is really annoying. I have followed every step of Inbox.com’s uninstallation process. What else can I do to get rid of this unwanted software?

  10. I have updated the article with some extra instructions that should help those of you having problems.
